While standing towards the edge of the plank, Peyton starts to dream of his escape back to his family. Ambrose Bierce designed this piece of literature to keep the readers attention, by going into the mind of Peyton. A man, Peyton Farquhar, is caught tarnishing with the bridge and is sentenced to be hanged.
